CJD Registry
The Brain Bank set up a CJD registry to record cases across the country and build epidemiological data about this rare and fatal neurodegenerative disease. A diagnostic biomarker, 14-3-3 protein in CSF, was indigenously developed by the Department of Neurochemistry in collaboration with the Brain Bank and offered as a free diagnostic test.
Cyt P450 and FMO Demonstrated
For the first time in world literature, major drug-metabolising enzymes such as Cytochrome P450 and flavin monooxygenases were demonstrated in human brain tissue, changing assumptions that xenobiotic metabolism was largely liver-based.
Neurodegenerative Diseases
Studies using midbrains from the Brain Bank contributed to understanding the etiopathogenesis of Parkinson's disease and suggested alternative protective mechanisms in the Indian population.
Neurogenetics
DNA samples from confirmed Lafora body disease cases supported collaborative work that discovered and localised the Laforin gene to chromosome 6q24.
HIV/AIDS Tissue and Fluid Bank
The Brain Bank established a major HIV/AIDS tissue and fluid bank that supported indigenous diagnostic kits, HIV subtype studies, and molecular tests validated with confirmed samples.
Fluid Bank
CSF and serum samples from well-characterised neuroinfectious, neurodegenerative, cerebrovascular, and control cases are used for disease pathobiology studies and diagnostic development.
Cadaver Heart Homograft Valves
The Brain Bank has collected human cadaver hearts at autopsy with informed consent, enabling aortic and pulmonary artery homografts for cardiac surgeons in Bengaluru and other centres in Karnataka.
Neurobiochemical Markers
Functional thiol transferase activity, cellular localisation and topographic distribution of p67 (MUNC 18), and p67 expression in neuronal/neuroglial tumours were demonstrated using archived material.
Neuroscience Education
ICMR supported neuroscience education and public awareness through advanced research, manpower development, translational research, posters, exhibitions, and Brain Awareness Week activities.
